Ian’s surge was the highest here in over 150 years
When Hurricane Ian came ashore just to the north in September 2022, its storm surge reached roughly 12 feet in Collier County and close to 14 feet at Fort Myers Beach — the highest recorded in Southwest Florida in more than a century and a half. In Naples the surge rolled over the dunes and into homes blocks from the water. Homeowners policies never cover flood, and the properties hit hardest included many where the owner had assumed the risk was someone else’s. If your only reference point is the last ordinary storm, this coast will outrun it.
